D-d-d-don't p-p-p-panic...

As chums here know, Senora O'Blene and I very rarely watch any live television, especially the awful BBC, and we haven't been 'swayed' by any adverts on the other channels either!

Comedy seems just about dead nowadays, with reliance on government-bashing, 'wet' ideas, weak, unfunny, rude delivery and general acceptance of bad manners and needless violence, so our shelves of DVDs have doubled in the last year!

The latest collection is the whole set of 'Dad's Army', with the original cast of course, and we started at the beginning, which is in black and white! The humour is still as fresh today as it was all those years ago! Last evening's showing was 'The armoured might of Lance Corporal Jones', and the scene of Jonesy with Private Walker, in the butcher's freezer discussing petrol coupons, caused total loss of vision and aching sides from absolute joy at the hugely funny excerpt, which is at around 10.50 on this clip!

Most citizens here will have watched this at some stage, but the short piece is still as hilarious now as it always was!

(Many thanks to Daily Motion for this clip  - may more people subscribe)!

Wonder if you could clarify: do they like it up 'em or not ?

In that freezer, they'd have to find it first...

For my wife's birthday I bought her a new fridge freezer

You should have seen her face light up when she opened it

Last week she left a note on the fridge:

"This isn't working"

But the light comes on and the food's still cold, so I don't know what she's on about.

If you cannot find your dog, open the fridge door.

He’s standing right behind you.

A physicist, a chemist, and a statistician walk into an office to discover the trash can is on fire.
The physicist announces "We must put the garbage can in the fridge so that the temperature will be below the ignition temperature and therefore put itself out!"

The chemist replies "No, we must cover the garbage can so that the fire consumes all of the oxygen and, in the absence of reactants, can no longer continue!"

Meanwhile, the two turn around to find that the statistician is running around the room setting everything else on fire. "What the hell are you doing??"

"Getting a proper sample size!"

Thank you for your posts. Most appreciated.
However. Would a small butcher have a "freezer" back in those days?
My 1950s memories of a butchers shop was that all that they had for sale was hanging up on hooks, in full view of the customers,or was on display on a counter.
Presumably demand was such that "sell by" dates were irrelevant.

I bought the whole set of 'Dad's Army' for my dad after Mum died. When I went round to share a beer with him we'd watch an episode or two.

If you don't watch much current TV output, you could check out "Forces TV". It's available on Freeview, Freesat & and other platforms. I only mention it because I'm currently watching their re-run of the 70's & 80's SciFi series "V". They have some "Classic" British comedy as well, but it was stumbling across that US series which has kept me tuned in. I'm sure I'm not the only one who secretly hankered after "Diana" - actress Jane Badler - when the show was originally aired...

Thanks, Microdave - I'd never have thought of looking there!

We also bought the series 'The Paradise Club', with Don Henderson and Leslie Grantham, and it is still just as good as it was all those years ago - although it's a digital copy of a VHS!

The series is so easy to drop into now and again, Mr H, especially with a beer!

Interesting point, Doonhammer...

Around here, there used to be an original ice house, which apparently worked for a whole year! They took ice from a local pond and stacked it in straw in a pit and kept the door shut!

I'll have to check on your note though!

Come back, MrMC - we need you after three posts click-click-click...

Ha ha ha!

Freezer jolly good fellow...

Doonhammer, interesting...

"The first freezers appeared during the 1940s, then known as deep freeze but did not go into mass production until after the World War II."

Jonesy's freezer was a large room, capable of hanging meat carcases etc., and I just assume that his was one of the first!

BTW thanks for the Marillion post I completely missed that album, only having "Misplaced" now have downloaded loads of tracks including the EPs for the car..

I have the full set of Dad's Army DVDs too and just love watching them. You can identify some people you know who have similar characteristics such as Mannering's pomposity and the shrewd and subtle cleverness of Sgt. Wilson, but my favourite is Mr. Yeatman. The psychological aspect of them all is so fascinating too. An orange anyone?

'The Vicar won't like it', GG!

We love his dancing around, and he and Frank Williams were a great match!

Luckily the BBC didn't try and make another 'spin-off' with just these two, but I bet they thought about it!

D'you remember 'All gas and gaiters' then?

MrMC said...

GG am with you I love the verger, I believe he ranks alongside Mainwering as hardly ever seen smiling, and a great sulky expression

Scrobs. said...

In last night's edition, Capt. Mainwaring was organising a dance, with the usual catastrophes, and The Verger and his wife were just hilarious, with the grumpiest faces you can imagine! Senora O'Blene had hysterics!

MrMC said...

I went to Thetford a while ago where it was filmed, one of the most awful little towns I have ever visited (but I like walking in the forest) and I may revisit after lockdown just to see the museum dedicated to the series.

There are several flicks on YouTube, Mr MC.

They all seem to include a bronze seated statue of Captain Mainwaring somewhere!

Senora O'Blene would agree with you that it isn't the most inspiring town, but like any places, there should be some corner of normal civilisation!
