The Clearasil years...

There never was a good time to have acne...

But this this track track managed to stay around for some considerable time...

It is a cruel affliction, and seemed much worse back in the sixties. Scrobs escaped lightly, but Hell-fire, some others just didn't. I'm so pleased that treatments seem to be more efficient these days, it was always a nasty moment while shaving just before taking out the girl of your dreams, and one of these blasted things appeared from nowhere!

Now, about hair...

Oh to be a teenager again with lovely music like that to jive to. Les Paul, Johnny and the Hurricanes, Chet Atkins, Duane Eddy etc. They don't write them like that any more - and I'd like to see/hear a certain train driver trying that one!

I too escaped the dreaded zits (my mum always made sure we ate all our veggies and used lots of hot water and soap!) but at the age of 15 I did suffer for a week or two from huge painful carbuncles, one under each armpit. So, as I could not hold my arms in by my side, I had to walk like some John Wayne wannabee or demented ape with arms swinging a few inches out; difficult with a case full of heavy schoolbooks. Still have the scars to prove it!

As this is a family site I will not repeat what one of my schoolmates said...but revenge was mine when he developed a real bloomer right on the tip of his nose a few months later.

I used to get it badly. It went on well into my thirties - still get the odd pimple now.

Her bro' and (clear skinned) wife are adamant that it's down to poor hygiene.

They once bought me a facial scrub and bar of antibacterial soap and if I had a spot she would look disgusted.

I've rarely been so offended than with that present. Seriously. I didn't say anything but just quietly seethed.

RVI - ate veggies and used lots of hot water and soap.

Gee. Why didn't I fink of that ?

Complete bollocks of course. I often scrubbed myself until I bled.

Acne is caused by a hormonal imbalance - an overproduction of oils (sebum)

It can be treated effectively by Roacutane though I wouldn't recommend it. The drug is linked to serious side effects of depression and suicide and my equally afflicted (but more self conscious) brother ended up on a mental ward undergoing Electric Shock Therapy.

Hot water and soap my arse.

Reevers/Elecs, I can remember guys with seething postules all over their faces, shoulders and necks, and them feeling pretty miserable about their condition too!

One of the worst cases was on the face of a very, very public chap I knew when I was a teeneager, now he's not so public, thankfully.

Evan one poor girl chum was afflicted very badly, but after she returned from a fortnight in Spain, she was as clear and free as a bird, and really got better from then on!

On a lighter note, I'd forgotten I bought the 'Spotniks' disc years ago, and seeing that Tube pic of the yellow labelled disc just clicked...!

(There was indeed some banter about the subject back then of course...)!

Elecs, I'm sorry that this may have resurfaced some nasty times for you - not intended of course!

Kevin, don't be such a sensitive old plucker. I was merely teasing.

I am fully aware that zits at that age are caused by hormonal conditions. Perhaps you did not read a little further into my note about the painful carbuncles? I assure you that was not pleasant; in fact it was extremely painful, not to say messy too as they constantly oozed a thick yellow goo which required the dressings to be changed amost hourly. Hence the scars they left when normally such visitations clear up leaving no trace.

Maybe I forgot to wash under my arms! Yes, that must have been it. Now why dint I fink of that too?

Thanks for that both.

I became quite robust about it but I do feel it strikes at a crucial time in childhood development and - like BO - it ranks you.

That rank stays for life.

I spent two summers working in a summer camp in the USA.

I had never seen such bad acne before. So many of the kids had it.

They were known as "Pizza Faces".

Lovely....

I think it's easier to deal with as a teenager as you can reassure yourself it's normal. Well, it is if you live on Macdonalds and pizza.

Hurrah, I have found a way to comment - have to do it as anon :-/

off topic: to explain Pips prob, I was having trouble with my laptop and told the computer chap at work I suspected a hardware prob. He said rubbish, he can sort it by wiping my pc, which he did. Now virtally nothing works and I still have the orig prob (which wouldn't have been solved by software change).

You can't get the staff!
