Opposition reaction
Conservative leader David Cameron said it was too soon to tell whether Mr Blair had misled the country about the reasons for going to war.
"Clearly, some of the information that was put in front of Parliament, the dodgy dossier for instance was just unacceptable and was wrong and shouldn't happen again but I think we have to wait for Chilcot's full report before we come to a full conclusion."
Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg, whose party opposed the war, said he "was not sure if people have learned that much which is substantially new from Tony Blair", but said it was a "good thing" he had appeared.
"Because that makes it all the more difficult for Britain ever to be taken to war again, simply on the personal whim of the prime minister," he added.
SNP Westminster Leader Angus Robertson said: "No matter how skilfully he ducked and dived today, Tony Blair's legacy will forever be that of the illegal, immoral Iraq war.
"Chillingly, the ex-prime minister showed no regret for his dubious decisions which led us into the worst foreign policy disaster in modern times."

I don't know why anyone should feel surprised that Tony Blair sat down today and told the Chilcot enquiry (or whatever it's being called) that everything he did was right and he would do it all over again, given the choice.
The man is a sociopath.
He has no shame. He has no regrets. He doesn't doubt that everything he did was ultimately right.
The various payoffs from American companies who will give Tony Blair huge cheques for after-dinner speeches are just part of the deal. So are the non-exec directorships.
This man has made millions whilst our brave boys and girls have died fighting an illegal war that he sanctioned.
There is a special seat in Hell that has his name writ large upon it.
A sound defence by Blair. All he need do is keep his mens rea to himself.
(Latin for covering one's arse.)
Well said Lakes.
This piece was lifted from the Beeb site, and left me astounded that three people who are expecting to take the stage when Brown gets kicked out, could waffle such inanities.
Luckily, as the whole world now knows Blair is going to scream anything to save his skin, (fiorget whether he is good at being a screamer, that's for the committee at 'Equity'), it will rebound on Brown later on in a very unpleasant way.
Like the look of Andrew Rawnsley's book BTW. Just as you and I were talking about recently, and plenty more to come out yet!
I didn't think it was a sound defence Elecs, I thought he just said what he wanted to.
In my book, that's not quite the same thing!
'Lessons to be learned'? By this old grumpy they have. Never vote for Labour AGAIN....only did it once...in 1997...the UK's Obama moment! The other lesson is DON'T vote for the Tories at this time either. Cameron is just Blair all over again. The UK is truly F*****!
I agree with Lakes Scrobs,
'The man is a sociopath'
Somewhere, someday, Blair will meet his redeemer and he won't be beyond the 'Gates of Heaven'
His redeemer....
'The Devil'...
will be stoking the 'Fires of Hell', with Sadam sitting at his right hand side..
Bring it on!

W.Veri... hates!
Ranter, we were all fed up with Major's ineptitude then - but I couldn't bring myself to vote in the prats we have locally.
In our borough, we have some of the most ineffective 'politicians' I've ever heard of!
When the son of a previous senior public figure of T. Wells was in severe difficulties with the law, nobody in the local rag (Courier)dared to mention the connection. The whole job was plastered over.
Even here, in deepest Kent, there are the usual arseholes at work.
They are also the suspects which are keeping Scobinvest from doing anything profitable, so believe it or not; Tonbridge beckons...
Just wait, they'll moan like hell in the 'ROYAL' borough and I'll be in a position to stick them good and proper!
I pay them far too much in poll tax for them to be ineffective pillocks.
Trubes!
You're an Evangelist, and I'd pay a million gold splonders to see you stand up in front of all of us and say those immortal words you've just writ!
Ok, Ok, Ok... ten million splonders!
As long as we can see your legs...
;0)
Rumour has it he's to be "asked back". Not likely to panic him, but hopefully destabilise the little toerag a little.
Tuscs! How the devil are you!
Bliar is becoming - I think - better known as a serial liar now. His expenses claims were all shredded ages ago, and it doesn't take an 'o' level in rocket science for even the thickest voter to agree that he isn't straight with anyone any more.
However, turkeys and Christmas spring to mind among those voters who may even be able to read a voting slip at a pinch.
The others will just go through the motions, and stay at home hopefully.
"The others will just go through the motions, and stay at home hopefully."
It's not good enough Scrobs... Mr. B. love him or loathe him preserves our comfy way of life... that's what Johnnies like him know... Mea Culpa?
I don't blame you for anything Modo.
Complacency in its raw form will always engender the sloth of the feeble and stupid.
That's what Brown wants, and also he pays yours and my money for it.
