Sanders of the Thames...

Scrobs Senior spent several years with The Royal Engineers in Nigeria after the war, presumably to create a place where they could build bridges, and get ready for independence.

Here's the old boy in his canoe, and the caption which goes with the second pic says 'CSM Nana Columbus, the best African I ever met'!

Just because I well remember him wanting to settle in front of the television to watch 'Sanders of the river', here is Paul Robeson singing the canoe song, which was apparently filmed at Shepperton, hence the lack of crocodiles and big snakes...

Canoe song.

More pics as requested by The Venerable Thud...

Lubbly bass jubbly!

I have been retired for many years now, but just before doing so, one morning I was walking along a corridor in the office humming this

A colleague heard me, said that's nic e and and asked what the tune was. I told him and who recorded it. "Never heard of him" he said.

That prompted me to do a quick survey among the staff, asking them if they had ever heard of Paul Robeson. There was a distinct split between yes and no and the split line was at age 38. Everyone over knew about him but the younger ones had never heard of him. I suppose the youngsters must have been victims from when the schools stopped teaching history.

Great pics, any more?

Reevers, that is a lovely song, and well worth a few more listens - thank you!

Interesting point you make about the man too. Paul Robeson never had it easy, and he showed 'em how all his life.

I'll pop some on now, Thud!

Great pictures. What will future generations think of those times?

I don't reckon that they thought what that great country became, somehow, Mr H.

Dad wouldn't be happy at all.

Glad you liked that one Scrobs.

Now, a little something somewhat similar but different from my own collection. Feel free to grab the missus and tread a measure round the kitchen table as you listen...

Still got a few artifacts from there, including two carved ebony (I think) heads...
