Norman Collier died recently, and just for the memory, I popped on this
CLASSIC to remind me of how funny he really was!
Reading his
OBIT here, he does seem to have been one of the dwindling genre of comedian who never wanted to upset anyone, and just relied on trying to be funny.
I saw him live in 1978, at 'The Talk of the Midlands', and easily remember all his acts, including the maniacal chicken, but the microphone sequence was always just hilarious...

Thanks for that Scrobs - just managed to save my keyboard from a tea bath! Don't seem to make them like that anymore, do they? I bet they are having a ball up there ^^ right now!
RIP
Before I saw him on stage all those years ago Reevers, he was just another TV comic that I'd vaguely heard of.
I goes to show that seeing these guys - and gals, on stage really does work well as long as one realises you have to actually get in your car and pay to go and see them.
Unfortunately, I really can't be arsed to do that, so as this was a company sponsored visit, to get a sales team 'bonded' (yup - even back then they did it...), I was the winner here!
I can still remember my boss crying with laughter, and some old dear of a waitress coming up to the table and saying (Derby accent), 'Is aynywoon 'ere 'aving enny moils''...
Bless.
Yes I don't find the Mark Steel gaggle of current Radio 4 comedians funny but they know how to play the system and have tax havens and offshore things. People like Norman Collier were funny and I remember seeing the Funky Moped man at a local club for pence rather than lots of pounds as part of a uk tour bringing them millions.
RIP real comedy.

You're so right, Pips. I reckon the 'One show' is the unfunniest waste of electricity going at the moment.
We're back to watching Youtube re-runs of real funny people like Julie Walters, and Jane Horrocks...

Love Julie Walters and Jane Horrocks. I've been sifting through old vids recently, that I've recorded off the telly, and found old funnies like Julie Walters blonde comedienne friend, that sang her songs at the piano - beat me on the botty with the woman's weekly. What was her name? And an evening with Kenneth Williams. Such class on Just a Minute with the chap who did that ad with Henry, the bloodhound.
But my fave, even amongst hilarious contempories, was Dave Allen.

And yes, Pips, Dave Allen but from the older shows - marvellous!
Too much modern comedy relies on spite these days.
The best comedy these days is on children's TV. Some of it is brilliant.
The Slammer, Horrible Histories, Sorry, I've Got no Head...
You're ight about the spite bit Elecs, especially the guys and gals who just spout anti-government rubbish all the time and expect everyone to find it funny!
Kids stuff seems to be dumbed down a bit though, looking at some of the TV 'inspired' (merchandised) stuff for the very young, it seems that they just have to say 'igglewiggle', and a child is expected to learn from that!
