VW...

I haven't done any research of late but, it seems that now is the time to get hold of one of these cars!

Recently, I took our Peugeot for an MOT, which it passed with flying colours, but while I was there, paying the bill and letting go a little gasp (it was cheaper than I thought it might be, so we now have a new shower in the bathroom, but that's another story), I asked the chap who does our car work, if the VW 'Up' had an auto version! He wasn't sure, but as is his wont, he then manhandled me over to an auto Polo, with the words, 'Just shut the do...!

I couldn't hear a thing, and the strength of that bodywork is a telling design which means much more to me and Mrs Scroblene than ever these days! Gone are the rorty pocket-rockets, we really don't do long drives these days, and my clutch leg hurts like hell if I don't plan ahead, so I want a small auto and that's that!

My esteemed and famous neighbour, who is a good friend, told me that the main reason why he bought a VW, was that he'd once seen a 20 ton lorry lose control in high wind and topple over onto a VW Golf in the West Country, and the whole of the car remained the same shape, as did the occupants, so that's another reason for wanting one! Also, his Golf has about forty-eight gears in an automatic gearbox, and it goes extremely well on motorways, so that's a big plus too!

My garage has a reputation second to none, and when our boat comes in (and I'm not at the station of course), we'll toddle off down to see him, listen to the twaddle, and walk out a bit poorer, but ready for anything a lorry can throw at us!

Luckily, the bit of news on the back of page four of the 'Kent Bugle and Reporter' about 'emissions', doesn't make me worry one little bit, as it's only a made-up figure dreamed up by the silly Prescott-fumed Kyoto 'agreement', (agreement? bollocks), which was a farce in itself, and of course the wasters in Brussels, who have so little to do which is useful!

Any 'bad' news is good advertising, and I just can't wait for that ship to come sailing into the station...

Well said Scrobs! Over the years I have owned a 101, 205 and 407 none of which has ever given me any trouble. Excellent and reliable cars. My little bro now has a 3008 with which he is very pleased too. I now drive a German gasguzzler, but I do assure you that when I bought it new, the very last thing on my mind was that little bit at the bottom of the owner's handbook about emissions, about which I couldn't give a stuff. I am fairly confident that that would also apply to 99.999% of other new car buyers. One of the younger female members of this family hurtles about town like a demented rabbit in her Polo - and her mum owns a Beetle too! Some people clearly have no regard to doing their bit to save the planet etc etc etc....

All this green guff is getting extremely tiresome, so I completely ignore it. One decent volcanic eruption will more than cancel out all the car emissions "saved" over the past 70 years.

Time to get out of the EU where the lunatics seem to - no, not seem to - have taken over the asylum. This is a very good opportunity for Mrs M to tell Junkers and his mates to get lost and for VW and the others to just carry on and ignore the Greenies. She seems to have ridden roughshod over all sorts of other EU laws and Directives lately, so why not one more for good measure! I doubt many honest Americans will cry too much over this nonsense from their Greenie bureaucrats either whose principal raison d'etre seems to be to put as many unrealistic hurdles as possible in the way of their business..

PS: Besides which I do like bendy bananas!

PPS: I am writing this in hazy conditions which make it extremely difficult to even see across the road, thanks to certain neighbours burning all their fields. So why should I care about the minimal driblets of fug that emanate from my car's exhaust?

yes, VAG group cars are indeed well-made, have tested this proposition several times and am still alive + kicking to prove it (we've had 7 over the years: though come to think about it the sun-roof of the Golf Mk4 did ship some water ...)

on your lorry / high wind story: I once saw a similar incident (from my window) and before I could get to the scene some passers-by rushed up and, from underneath the angled high-sided van, pushed it back upright so the car could drive away! one more gust ...

bleedn'l ! I could hardly bring myself to watch

they got away with it, but ... bleedn'l

The most harmful emissions are the lies emitted by environmental nutters.

A colleague was out driving his Skoda Fabia - a VW in all but name - when he was Tboned hard and rolled down the road. He was so impressed with the lack of consequences he went straight out and bought another. As others have remarked few buyers are led by the emission figures but that won't stop thousands of Americans and their ambulance-chasing lawyers making a mint!

Thank you, Reevers - my sentiments entirely!

I'd have thought that a tax on all that hot (tepid) air coming out of Brighton would be more than enough to raise the 'emissions tax' by more than ten percent, such was the content of a load of twattish rubbish, and so we'll look to real reasons why we want a car, not what some bent politician decides!

Blimey, Nick! Some scary yarn that!

VW will bounce back from all this; nobody really cares about emissions, unless they're politically incontinent, and if one wants a good, safe car, which is up there with the best in reliability, then why look elsewhere?

The current market in 'emissions', which is based on political shenanigans, is unacceptable, but that's what these political 'people' do for a living.

Other people work hard!

'Environment', I seem to remember, was dreamed up by Tony Benn, who did more to bugger up any British trade than any other 'politician'.

The nutters just had to jump on the bandwagon, because it was a safe platform for them to create a 'market', which was then grasped by the same politicians as a reason for their existence!

So proper companies, who had resources, manipulate the little people in 'Bis', and just take the profits!

If Corbyn wants to get at these people, he ought to think a bit harder...

Oh yes, of course, Jannie, I didn't have the lawyers in my thoughts at the time of writing...

My recent experience of these parasites is to just ignore their credentials, and put them down as opportunists like everyone else with their noses in the trough.
