As most friends here know, I am probably classified as an old fart.
I have no problem with this, because, by being old, (62...), I can really say what I mean, and I don't care much if others disagree - except if I've inadvertantly upset someone, which is not why I'm here.
But did you notice the body language of Brown, when he arrived at Buck House to say he's pissing off?
He charged off on arrival, leaving 'the wife' behind, shaking hands with soldiers, 'important' flunkies etc, and eventually made his wife follow him into the place where he was going to self-destruct!
What incredibly bad manners!
So; Good, Gordon Drown - you're history.
Now just flash back a few minutes later, to Cameron, arriving at the same house in Whitehall. Deference clear in his manners, and, spot the difference - they were evident in that moment he arrived in Downing street, when he stopped short and immediately helped Sam from the car, and they both walked up towards the front door of Number Ten.
Good live action this - I've waited long and hard for this moment.
Very significant differences, not deference though, merely good manners and respect.
ReplyDeleteWhat surprised me was the way Brown marched off down Downing Street, almost dragging his wife and kids behind him.
Evening - nearly morning Mrs Rigby!
ReplyDeleteI thought so; and I always like the friendly touch - never, ever, a grope, although, the sentiments behind the action should never be too far off the mind...
Well, why not - it works both ways?
It doesn't seem like good grace, Scrobs. Grace is either a gift or acquired after much practice ... so that it comes when feeling least graceful.
ReplyDeleteBeware saying what you think when you get older - you're not as free as it seems. I've been estranged from my own father (and hers) for over six months now. They both forgot who might be wiping their arses in dotage when they dissed me.
(Fuck the inheritance.)
Happy days scrobs!
ReplyDelete"Beware saying what you think when you get older - you're not as free as it seems."
ReplyDeleteMaybe Elecs, but at least you and I still talk on equal terms, and that is the way I'll always want it to be.
And I just got a bit older too...
Thudders, it really is a bit of a watershed isn't it!
ReplyDeleteI could have cut my throat this morning; there was absolute despair everywhere I looked - including on the Scrobs Inc horizon.
Somehow, it took a few hours on the phone to real people who actually do the work in this world, and I felt a bit better...
And now, for some reason, sleep doesn't beckon, so why not chat with a few diehards here!
And that includes you of course!
Morning Scrobs: I hear on the completely 100% utterly reliable expat grapevine that Wednesday has been declared as a national holiday in the UK because everyone is suffering from almighty hangovers.
ReplyDeleteOne lot from too much celebration and the other lot from too heartily drowning (?browning) of sorrows. It was on the interwebby thingy so it must be true.
{slinks off stage right humming "I heard it through the grapevine"}
I thought you'd be made up, Scrobs. Interesting point you make on the different way they treat women. Not many in the cabinet though which is causing some comment, except May and her blasted shoes (the media don't seem to comment on anything but where she's concerned - not much equality there). But I disagree that 62 is old, Scrobs. Nope, completely disagree.
ReplyDeleteHere, here - what Pip said. You young whippersnapper! Stop being so ageist or we'll send the boys in the long red coats from Chelsea round!
ReplyDeleteAgree, though, I too no longer give tuppence about offending anybody if they deserve to be corrected with rather more than a slightly raised eyebrow.
Bit of an awkward moment at the love-in today though when some journo told Clegg that Cam had had called him his favourite joke. *cough*
ReplyDeleteI tend to find that the Conservatives treat women as they find them. If they are good enough then they will promote them to the highest office (unlike Labour.) In fact I'm sure that they are desperate to find them - which says more about the availability of suitable women that it does the Conservative party.
ReplyDeleteReevers, I missed that, but confess that the pub we went to for a meeting was chocka...
ReplyDeleteWetherspoons do a good Grapevine!
Thanks Pips, perhaps you're right...
ReplyDeleteI quite like Theresa May, but wish she would just slow down a gear with the automatic political speak.
That 'joke' will came back again and again Pips!
ReplyDeleteAren't there more Conservative women MPs this time Elecs?
ReplyDeleteI saw in the Spec that quite a lot of names were left out - possibly because of the need to make space for Clegg's people, and there were at least three women there...
"Maybe Elecs, but at least you and I still talk on equal terms, and that is the way I'll always want it to be."
ReplyDeleteI don't particularly mind not being on equal terms. There are times when deference is due.
As of women in the work place ...
I don't think they understand that the vast majority of men are sidelined, glass-ceilinged and take a lot of stick too. My police experience was quite brutal (in some cases physically) to the point that I had square ups in locker-rooms and dormitories. My railway experience was better but this was due to the fact that I was well prepared to halt it by five years of police brutality.
Hey Scobs I'm two years older than
ReplyDeleteyou and, I don't feel at all old.
Mentally, I feel mature and wiser, but that's not old or, is it?
Physically, as most know,I'm laid up with slipped discs etc, So I suppose, I am acting in an 'older manner'.
When DT pushes me around in the Wheelchair, I find, people are very kind, in opening doors etc, and when I visit Hospital there is a lower desk to deal with Wheelchair bound persons, which is very useful....Still I don't feel OLD !
So,do get a grip Scrobies Darling...we adoring lady fans don't go for 'old farts', so that sort of puts you out of the equation!
What do ya think girls?
Di.xx
For you - and everyone else then Trubes, I'll retract everything Iv'e said about being an old fart, and become a vibrant bloke, bursting with energy!
ReplyDeleteWhen I wrote all this, it did seem that it was a pit pompous to say what I did, and also it's not getting easier all round at the moment, so 'tired and emotional' - (without the alcohol at that time of morning of course) may describe the sentiment!
(Note to Scrobs - try and be a bit more upbeat in future, you've been told to by Trubes and Pips as well!)
OK, we'll all forgive you this time - but only if you toddle (gracefully, of course, as befits a scholar and a gentlemen - though not necessarily in that order) along to the post office and pick up our giros. Ta. <:o))
ReplyDeleteThank you Reevers - I'll be along with the change shortly...
ReplyDeleteHow many bottles of Wincarnis did you say...?
