Considering Bernie Taupin wrote this in 1974, it seems to me that he was more of a visionary than given credit for.
Songfacts explain a lot more about the song here: - https://www.songfacts.com/facts/elton-john/ticking . I'd forgotten about the Columbine High massacre, and hearing it all again rather took the shine off a pleasant trip to a chum's house - such that I actually missed the turning to his road!
Maybe the guy was a visionary, but it’s an odd thing to do, writing a song about such things. After all, globally well over a million people a year die in road traffic accidents. A ticking motorist is the bigger threat.
ReplyDeleteGood point, Mr H.
ReplyDeleteI reckon a song about road rage could do quite well, but it would have to be a rap, so that everybody with only half a brain would 'understand' it!
Tsssch ! How very dare you say that about (c)rap music ! Our new culture, MLE being the new continuity voice over on the Beeb. When did Cockney get its turn ? I must have missed it.
