Joint effort...

Over the last week or so, Scrobs has been making a wooden stand for holding an iPad to scan photographs etc. It's been a labour of love, and the sort of 'challenge' which is achievable with some offcuts of plywood, a few wingnuts and a modicum of sandpaper...

We have hundreds of photos taken before digital cameras came on the scene, and the old albums take up a lot of space, and while they are really family treasures, we could use the space for other things like red wine bottles...

While working on the design, I mused at all the sorts of ways I could join the various parts, and decided that pure fasteners would be the most effective way, and also the easiest, hence the screws etc.!

Many years ago, the old school hall was a fifties design, and while OK for PE, films and concerts, when these became boring, I would sit staring up at the way the roof was supported and spent ages gazing at one particular joint, which I learned, much later, was in fact a 'squinted scarfed joint' such as this one here...

It seems to be a bit of a bugger to make, but the end result joins two pieces of wood, forming an even longer piece, which is exactly what I used to stare at!

But hey, just check out this beautiful piece of work!

Now that must be nearly impossible, and hardly the sort of  design an ageing Scrobs could even dream about, let alone make!

  1. The iPad gadget looks neat, much better than I could manage. I ought to do something with our old photo albums, but what is to be done with them after scanning? Just destroy them?

  2. Thank you, we just store them in photo boxes we bought from Rymans a few years ago. I'm right in the middle of trying to work out how to transfer them to a laptop/PC, and all sorts of apps keep appearing, which is total confusion here, at the moment!

The boxes are somewhere upstairs at the moment - I think...

  3. I think you've done jolly well there Scrobs. I must admit I have a hankering to do some sort of woodwork myself especially as the smell of newly-made sawdust sends me into a sort of happy zombie-like trance. I've recently given my furniture a good waxing but saw a wood expert on TV who has a special formula that brings out the best in the colour and grain consisting of equal parts methylated spirits, white vinegar, turps and linseed oil. I shall have a go next week but must remember not to smoke in the near vicinity.

  4. Nice work! my bro in law bought me a book on Japanese carpentry, I believe he did it to frustrate me.

  5. Thank you, GG! It seems to work OK, but that was the easy part! Trying to understand how to copy the pics to a PC is a more difficult subject than astrophysics...

There isn't a lot of room here for larger projects, but as you have a garage, get a bench and away you go!

  6. Thud, after seeing the way you made that fabulous guitar, I wouldn't worry too much about the Japanese ways, although I find them absolutely wonderful to see!
