First TV play I can recall...

Mrs Scroblene and I bought several DVDs of old favourites last year, and one of them was the boxed set of 'It ain't half hot Mum', as it's gentle humour, and fine fun with the various actors!

As most people know, the character Gloria is played by Melvyn Hayes, who camps it up to the hilt in every episode!

Years ago, before we even had a television at home, my sister and I watched a friendly neighbours' set in black and white, and back then there was a serial called 'The Silver Sword'. It was a pretty deep story for children, by Ian Serraileur, and here's a small snippet...

Melvyn Hayes was Edek, the brother.

I've never forgotten the bit where the father escapes by making a catapult out of the elastic from some old boots, and flinging a stone at the guard!

  1. I don't remember that Scrobs but I suspect my parents wouldn't allow us to watch anything pertaining to war, they lost a few family members and friends when Liverpool was blitzed in WW2
I loved 'It Ain't 'Alf Hot Mum. I remember Melvyn in Summer Holiday. Who was the tiny singer with the falsetto voice, in It Aint Half Hot Mum, was it Don Estelle ? Superb voice...

  2. Nope, I don't recall that either. Mind you, our first tv was only bought in 1955 - a 9" b&w Pye.

On matters military, It ain't 'alf hot mum, and the Army Game remind me of my more youthful days. Whatever happened to belly-laughing British comedy after the 2 Ronnies and Morecambe and Wise days?

  3. PS - forgot about that bank manager fellow and his merry band of heroes who should be added to my list.

  5. It was indeed Don Estelle, Trubes!

He got on TOTP with Windsor Davies doing the old Ink Spots number, 'Whispering grass'!

  6. It's all gone a bit nasty, the humour bit, Reevers.

I suppose there are a few proper comedians around, but if they're on TV, we'd miss all that anyway!
