Rose Metcalf - hero from Giglio...

This is an utterly remarkable clip from the Today prog a couple of days ago.

Apparently, there were then several seconds of stunned silence, and Jim Naughtie could only express total admiration. His co-presenter was even more explicit..."Wow"!

What a Lady!

  1. She has more guts than the Captain who was too busy saving his own skin.

    What a disgrace!

  2. What a lucky lady too. The rocks the ship came to rest on kept it higher out of the water than might otherwise have been the case. If it had tilted the other way it would have finished up like the Townsend Thorensen(?) boat off the French coast a few years ago and a lot more lives would have been lost.

That cowardly (and intensely stupid captain, if what we read about him wanting to wave to somebody on shore is true) deserves everything he has coming to him.

This incident also confirms my utter resolution, from way back when, to never go cruising (brought about as a child when I saw live pictures of a doomed cruise ship on fire in the middle of the ocean somewhere with no hope of anyone getting near enough in time to save most of the passengers, a memory that has lingered a long time). I can just about manage Dover-Calais without getting the hebejeebies.

    A devout practising coward, me!!

  3. People always criticise me for observing dangers and they seem to have blind faith in authority figures. "Oh they wouldn't be allowed to do that" is the usual protest.

This world is operated by people. People make mistakes. They cut corners. Or in the case of this captain are wantonly negligent, stupid and cowardly.

  4. I live in dread of finding myself on the news next to a picture of train wreckage.

This man was a prize chump. Not even when I was driving Eurostars with thousands on them would I have dreamed of showing off.

I felt nothing but humbled by the engineers who had brought it all into being.

Pilots, drivers and Captains are really not the big cogs in the system that they think they are - though they can be a right spanner in the works !

  5. Would very much appreciate your opinion over at mine, Scrobs. All thoughts welcome.

In fact I feel like throwing a few invites out to get opinions...

  7. Cruising's never ever been on our agenda Reevers.

Seeing the passengers you want to instantly dislike from day one would just be far too much...
