I’ve just seen an item on the BBC’s evening news, about pregnant women being advised not to drink.
So here we go with more of the usual mind-boggling and confusing ‘guidance’. I think any news about the NHS actually doing something ‘positive’, by being mentioned on the news, several times a week, doing ‘research’, or ‘learning lessons’, is a huge astroturfing exercise. The constant drip-drip of ‘news’ items deflects criticism of the current disregard for sick patients who actually hope a doctor will see them, and they can get better. We have to visit a District Nurse with Mrs S’s Mum on Bank holiday Monday, because the local surgery is closed for three days!
By the way, Mrs S. actually didn’t touch a drop when she was having our two girls, mainly because she just couldn’t stand the taste during pregnancy! This was an unusual situation for me to appreciate for some time, but I learnt eventually! I made up for the deficiency of course, and there is still a smouldering, doubtful understanding of the foibles of the rugby club while making sure I turned up at the hospital…
Interestingly, the received wisdome here in Italy is a half pint of Guinness or Mackeson's Milk Stout per day; someone with more energy than me can check what each conuntry's respective birth defect rates - if I recall, you're better off here with the beer.
ReplyDeleteIt's all part of the puritanical nanny agenda. We have managed to be quite a successful nation despite some women drinking a little during their pregnancy.
ReplyDeleteThen there are those women who drink a lot. My cousin, the old soak, has ruined her kids health by being soused throughout both her pregnancies. The resulting condition of the children is heartbreaking to behold.
ReplyDeleteMy mother, whilst pregnant with me, used to drink a few glasses of Wincarnis after meals. I have grown into a fine specimen of a man and am often complimented on my fine sense of balance.
ReplyDeleteGood grief !
ReplyDeleteThis morning's news is all about labelling alcohol bottles.
ReplyDeleteHow many bars are there in the House of Commons?
The source of all this propaganda is a certain rehab centre which is funded from Saudi Arabia by friends of AlQuaeda. In other words they are the same people who funded 9/11 and so on.. Wahaabi fundamentalists. I like Turkish Moslems who run all the best bars in Germany...
ReplyDeleteMutley,
ReplyDeleteYou've managed to put so much into that post, I need to lie down in a darkened shed somewhere...
Where do I start...
Perhaps you actually have to be a bit alcoholic to sustain drinking during pregnancy...I had a certain tolerance for booze beforehand but the hormonal changes have rendered me evermore a lightweight.
